ARTWORK WITHIN WEST VILLAGE
Bamboo Waves – Honouring Our Past
The Bamboo Wave begins its journey by paying tribute to the Parramatta River as one of the most important historical and cultural symbols at the heart of the Eora nation. ‘Parramatta’ is an Aboriginal name derived from the Burramattagol clan of the Darug people, the traditional custodians of this land for over 60,000 years. The Parramatta River is where ocean saltwater meets river freshwater, of where the eels spawn and then migrate from river to sea. This repeats every full moon cycle, representing migration, movement and new life – its significance symbolically shared by both the river and the people.
Polygon Butterfly – Inspiring The Future
While the Bamboo Wave honours the past through tribute to the Parramatta River and the eel, the Polygon butterfly inspires hope for the future. With the eel beholden to its roots, the butterfly inspires us to conceptualise the future through the way we creatively think, move and live. A universal symbol of metamorphosis, the butterfly artwork is a testament that the people of Parramatta are and always will be in a state of transformation and new beginnings. Parramatta is a place of optimism and encouragement.
